Staff/Principal Frontend Engineer
UMATR is partnering with a venture-backed startup building software infrastructure for advanced hardware systems. We are looking for a Staff/Principal Frontend Engineer to join them remotely from within the US.
About the company
Our client builds the data and software layer that sits underneath some of the most demanding physical engineering programmes in the world. Their platform ingests high-rate telemetry from complex machines, validates autonomy and control software as it runs, and gives the engineers working on these systems a faster feedback loop without compromising on safety or precision. The team is small, cross-disciplinary, and takes problems end-to-end across the hardware and software boundary.
They serve a mix of commercial and defense customers in regulated, mission-critical domains, and are backed by top-tier global investors alongside experienced operators from some of the world's leading technology, space, and autonomy companies.
This role is focused on turning dense, technical data into interfaces that feel fast, clear, and genuinely usable. You'll be building the product surfaces that the company's most sophisticated users rely on every day.
What you'll do
- Build and refine product features in React, TypeScript, and Next.js, with a strong focus on craft and usability.
- Work closely with backend engineers to integrate APIs and deliver smooth end-to-end experiences.
- Partner with product and design on validating flows, prototyping, and iterating on features.
- Contribute to the frontend architecture, particularly around handling large data volumes and keeping the UI responsive under load.
- Optimise for performance so that complex, data-heavy views stay fast and fluid.
What we're looking for
- 3+ years of frontend engineering experience, ideally shipping web applications or data-driven tools.
- Strong command of React, TypeScript, and modern JavaScript tooling (Next.js a plus).
- A real eye for UX and visual detail, and the instinct to push back on designs that will not hold up in use.
- Comfort integrating with APIs (REST, GraphQL, or similar) and reasoning about client-server boundaries.
- A collaborative approach and a willingness to feed into product decisions, not just execute tickets.
Ideal background
- Experience building products for technical or expert users, such as dashboards, timeseries visualisation, or complex data-editing environments.
- Familiarity with utility-first CSS (Tailwind or similar) and modern component libraries.
- Performance engineering experience, especially rendering or virtualising large datasets.
- Bonus: exposure to WebGL, canvas-based visualisation, or graphics programming.
Logistics
- Locations: New York, NY, Los Angeles, CA, or Austin, TX.
- Base salary: $130,000 to $230,000 per year.
- Benefits include full medical, dental, and vision coverage, unlimited PTO, free lunch and snacks in office, a professional development stipend, and an annual company retreat.
- ITAR: to comply with U.S. Government export regulations, applicants must be a (i) U.S. citizen or national, (ii) U.S. lawful permanent resident, (iii) Refugee under 8 U.S.C. § 1157, or (iv) Asylee under 8 U.S.C. § 1158, or be eligible to obtain the required authorisations from the U.S. Department of State.
